How to find missing terms of Linear (Arithmetic) Sequence if any TWO CONSECUTIVE TERMS are given

QUESTION: Find the missing terms of the following linear(arithmetic) sequence

 ____, ____, 61, 52, ………

SOLUTION:

STEP 1: Find Term-to-Term Rule.

The formula for nth term of a Linear(Arithmetic) Sequence is:

nth term = First term + (n – 1) × Term-to-Term Rule——–(1)

where n = 1, 2, 3, ……  gives us the position of terms of sequence.

Now,

Third term = 61 (given)

Fourth term = 52 (given)

Term-to-term Rule = Fourth term – Third term  52 – 61 = -9

Thus Term-to-Term Rule is “Subtract 9”.

STEP 2: Apply Term-to-Term Rule and find the missing terms.

Fourth term = 52

Third term = 61

Second term = Third term + 9  61 + 9 = 70

First term = Second term + 9  70 + 9 = 79

Hence the given linear(arithmetic) sequence is

79, 70, 61, 52, ………
