Real-World Problem

of

Fraction

QUESTION: What is the fraction of the class that is girls and that
which is boys in a class of 20 students and 8 girls?

SOLUTION:

Here,
total number of students are 20.

Among
20,

8
are girls so means rest are boys.

That
is, 20 – 8 = 12 boys.

In
a fraction the denominator
(the number at the bottom) represents total
number of parts in which the whole is divided.

And
the numerator
(the number at the top) represents the selected
part of total.

So,
fraction of girls = `frac8{20}`

Divide
both numerator and denominator by 4 to simplify

fraction
of girls = `frac{8div4}{20div4}=frac{2}{5}`

and

fraction of boys =
`frac{12}{20}`

Divide
both numerator and denominator by 4 to simplify

fraction
of boys = `frac{12div4}{20div4}=frac{3}{5}`

SOME MORE INFORMATION:

In
the above diagram, you can see that the fraction
 `frac{2}{5}` and
`frac{8}{20}`
are equal selected parts, although the left one is divided into
5 equal parts and the right one is divided into 20 equal parts. These are
called
EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS.

Similarly, `frac{3}{5}` and
`frac{12}{20}`
are equivalent fractions.
