Rules of Division of Integers
Division of integers is either represented as a fraction or by division sign(÷).
That is,
and
6÷3
means the same.
Note: 6 is named as dividend, 3 a divisor and the answer, 2, is a quotient.
RULE 1: If both dividend and divisor have same signs then the quotient will be a positive integer.
For example:
8÷2 = 4
Both 8 and 2 are positive integers, so the quotient, 4, is a positive integer.
(-8) ÷ (-2) = 4
Both -8 and -2 are negative integers, so the quotient, 4, is a positive integer.
RULE 2: If dividend and divisor have opposite signs, then the quotient will be a negative integer.
For example:
15 ÷ (-3) = -5
Here, 15 is a positive integer and -3 is a negative integer, so the quotient, -5, is a negative integer.
(-15) ÷ (3) = -5
Here, -15 is a negative integer and 3 is a positive integer, so the quotient, -5, is a negative integer.
